OG Kush makes up the genetic backbone of West Coast cannabis varieties, but in spite of its ubiquity, its genetic origins remain a mystery. Popular myth maintains that Chemdawg and Hindu Kush parented it, passing on the distinct “kush” bud structure we see in many strains today. However, we can’t be sure because it first came from bag seed in the early 90s. The earliest propagators (now known as Imperial Genetics) are said to have brought the seeds out of Florida to Colorado and southern California, where it now flourishes. There are many different phenotypes of the strain, some of which include Tahoe OG, SFV OG, and Alpha OG.
OG Kush is cherished for its ability to crush stress under the weight of its heavy euphoria. It carries an earthy pine and sour lemon scent with woody undertones, an aroma that has become the signature of the varieties and descendants. With this kush, patients most commonly cite improvements in migraines, ADD/ADHD, and stress disorders.

Originally from Northern California, this cannabis strain has quickly become known around the world for its distinct aroma and strong effects. OG Kush is a very unique strain that can’t be compared with any other marijuana strains.
Its true genetics are unknown. Some say its is a mix of ChemDawg with a Lemon Thai and Pakistani Kush. Others say that it’s just a special cutting of ChemDawg from the early 90s. Even the meaning of the name OG has been debated; with some saying it means Original Gangster. However, now, because of its origins, most people agree it means Ocean Grown.
The most popular strain?
One thing that is not debated is the popularity of this feminized cannabis strain. From Hollywood movie stars and rappers to medical marijuana users, OG Kush is loved by many. The most obvious trait of OG Kush is its strong, unique, very dank, slightly citrus aroma, almost like fuel or strong detergent. The flavour of OG Kush is equally as strong and dank, with a long-lasting aftertaste.
Strong mental and physicall high
OG Kush is an extremely strong cannabis strain, with most experienced smokers listing it as one of their favourites. The effect is as strong physically as it is mentally. Though its effect is like an Sativa, the strain’s genetics are mostly Indica. The effect is as strong and complex as the flavour. OG Kush takes around 8 weeks to flower and on average the yield is 500 grams per plant.
Big buds with lovely tones
OG Kush is known to stretch slightly during growth but soon starts to fill out during flowering. Generally, it will reach a height of 90 to 160 cm. Its buds are large and dense, lime green clusters covered with a large amount of resin. There are many good reasons why OG Kush has become so popular. OG Kush Renowned For Its Medicinal Qualities
Nearly everyone has heard of the marijuana strain, OG Kush. It’s easily one of the most popular medical marijuana strains grown and sold by dispensaries today. Its popularity has skyrocketed between celebrities, musicians, and medical marijuana patients alike; known specifically for its highly resinous, sticky, and condensed buds that create a full-body warp.
OG Kush is a strong Hybrid that will leave you in a deep, stoney trance that will have you staring off into space for a couple of prolonged hours.
What The “OG” in OG Kush Stands For
There are a lot of common misconceptions surrounding our strain, most notably the confusion where the strain comes from and what specific genetics OG Kush consists of. There are many mysterious legends about OG Kush and what ‘OG’ stands for, however… the truth remains unproven to this day.
One of the most promising accounts explaining the origins of the OG Kush strain is below:
- Kailua Kid from the Sierra Seed Company believes that in late 93’ a grower in northern California got his hands on the famous Chemdawg strain. He goes on to say (summarized from Seedfinder.eu), . The male was a cross of Lemon Thai and an Old World Paki Kush (possibly where the ‘Kush’ came from), and was an ideal mix for the Chemdawg. The buds became wildly popular in Los Angeles by ’95.
We also came across a number of other (less-likely) theories about the origins of the strain and try to explain what ‘OG’ stands for.
